Distinctive Paper Mosaics and Collage Art by Marj Engle
This past August I featured the attractive paper mosaic leaf jewelry that Marj Engle makes in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and then discovered she also creates unique collages that reflect where she lives. I knew immediately that I would like to feature her again... this time in the Artist Spotlight, so I invited Marj to tell us about her collage work and the original technique she developed.

"I began making paper mosaic art in 2008 after years of
watercolor painting. I was ready to explore a different style. I like
the look of tile mosaic art and stained glass, and wanted to recreate
that look in a form that felt more manageable and less messy.

Because a
standardized paper mosaic technique doesn’t really exist, I spent a good
deal of time perfecting my own technique. I use a glue stick for
adhering, and then coat the final piece with Mod Podge and Krylon UV
resistant acrylic spray.

Conservation of resources is important to me,
leading me to use recycled materials when I can. Wood "canvases" such as
plates, trays, and boards found at thrift stores are often the base for
my work, and I mostly use magazines as my paper source.

I love color - deep and rich, bright and playful - all color. I
also like pattern and repetition. I enjoy using artistic license to play
with these elements and bring new interpretations to often used images
(many from the natural world). My favorite thing, however, is to steer
clear of any representation and simply play with the above elements to
create a pleasing abstract image."
