10 Paper Craft Kits and Downloadables to Enlighten Your Summer (or Winter)
'Tis slowdown season whether you're in the Northern or Southern hemisphere, so to my way of thinking it's time to try our hands at a new paper craft or two.
Everything in the Flourishing Fibers Etsy shop owned by Sara Pastrana appeals to me because stitching on paper is so relaxing. The Falling Leaves downloadable pattern is minimal perfection and I also like the sturdy card stock background she used. I believe it's Limba White by Gmund with the look of woodgrain.
Little Hearts would be lovely as a framed gift for a baby's nursery. Sara also stocks a versatile 3-in-1 Awl for paper piercing that has ultra fine, fine, and heavy points.
Eliza Redmann's Etsy shop Folded Poetry came to be after she suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident that upended her career as an architect. Read more on her website about the way creating with paper has helped her cope with new limitations.
She describes her DIY Sculpture Kit (above) as an "architectural art exploration in its purest form." It contains ten laser cut shapes that are ready to be folded, glued, and turned into 3-D forms, as well as a QR code link to a demonstration video.
The Folded Poetry DIY Kit also arrives with laser cut shapes that you'll fold, tape, and glue into 3-D forms, along with a backer board and QR code to an instructional video.
Mari Richards' Etsy shop Smallful offers a clever array of instantly downloadable paper crafts for little ones. These colorful paper crowns would be perfect for birthday celebrations, tea parties, or dress up fun. They're available as a set of four styles to be made by young partygoers, or fold them ahead of time to generate a festive air as guests arrive. A downloadable file for each style can also be purchased individually.
Delicate sweet peas don't grow well here in Delaware as it can be quite hot and humid, so the next best thing would be to make a bouquet of my own. In addition to the Sweet Peas Kit, Katie Bergin and Rachel Bath of Etsy shop BerginandBath offer four additional choices of paper flower kits that are filled with Italian crepe paper, stem wires, floral tape, a template, and of course, detailed instructions. There is also a video link.
Knowing that many of you were excited about trying cyanotype printing via last week's book giveway of Beginner's Guide to Cyanotype, you might like to know that author Kim Tillyer offers two kits via her website, Witchmountain.
The Cyanotype Kit is the one she recommends for those who are new to the art, as it contains everything you'll need. The Mini Cyanotype Kit is for those who are already familiar with the process... perhaps you've taken one of Kim's workshops. Either kit would be a fine companion for the new book.
Claire of Carta & Wood pretty much does it all when it comes to paper... she creates installations, does set design, constructs props, etc. She also offers a selection of attractive kits like this Paper Raindrop Wall Hanging. You'll score, fold, glue, and thread the baubles to make a statement piece for a baby's nursery or wherever you like a bit of cheer.
Cassie and Lily of Etsy shop, Galleri Girl Art Kits, describe their offerings as "a cool blend of inspired art projects incorporating creative principals into daily life." Sounds good to me and no doubt to young party guests. The Suminagashi Marbling Kit is for ages 4 and up, and is an Etsy Pick. Free delivery too!
Do you have a favorite paper craft kit from this selection or have you already found one that you love and would like to tell us about? I hope you'll share!
