Nine New and Upcoming Paper Craft Books
Twice a year or so, I like to round up newly published or soon to be released books about paper craft and paper art. Read on to learn about nine enticing titles that just might have you dipping into a new hobby in 2024. While some won't be out until summer, I figure it never hurts to have them on our radar as they give us something to look forward to.
Emily Paluska's book, Crafting Paper Flowers: A Visual Guide to Breathtaking Botanicals for C & T Publishing / Stash Books will be released on July 25. The 176-page paperback teaches even beginners to make 24 beautifully detailed crepe paper flowers and plants via step-by-step instructions and photos. She then shows how to combine them into bouquests, a garland, wreaths, a potted plant, and a cloche.
Weaving Paper: 13 Upcycled Projects with Scrap Paper by Dorothea Katharina Schmidt is a 96-page hardcover from Schiffer Craft that will be out on March 28. Thirteen functional projects ranging from small baskets to tote bags are detailed via step-by-step instructions and photos whether you're using newspaper, junk mail or brochures. Finishing techniques such as varnishing, dyeing, and stenciling are covered too.
Mind-Blowing Kusudama Origami: The Art of Modular Paper Folding by Byriah Loper will be released by Tuttle Publishing on March 26 in both paperback and Kindle versions. Diagrams, photos, and step-by-step instructions included in the 144 pages make it possible to recreate thirty of Byriah's original geodesic spheres that are assembled from small pieces of folded paper.
The 128-page paperback, Papercraft: Unique Projects in Paper to Cut, Fold, and Create, by Hattie Newman will be released by Ilex Press on August 6... or perhaps I should say re-released. Despite its new title and cover, it appears to be the same book as 2018's Say It with Paper: Fun Papercraft Projects to Cut, Fold, and Create that still appears on Amazon, however, only used copies are available.
I can understand why Say It with Paper sold out, as reviews are positive and the publisher's description sounds great: "Discover paper's true potential with this book full of exciting projects that enable you to discover new paper arts, such as pop ups, papercuts and 3-D shapes. Learn how paper can be used to communicate ideas, how it can be photographed and lit to great effect and even how it can be animated. Develop skills in construction, tessellation, model making and scene creating, while also working with scale and moving parts. Paper has never been more fun and more intriguing."
"Projects include: animal masks, ice creams, shadow puppets, tropical island, Ferris wheel, 3-D pig, car, lantern, geometric mobile, paper food, pop-up greetings card, paper theatre, giant pencil, and many more."
The Art of Correspondence: A Letter is Practically a Gift (Victoria), a 164-page hardcover book from 83 Press that will be released on April 2 looks to be a beauty. Brought to us from the editors of Victoria magazine, its mission encourages letter writing and journaling.
It's a timely publication as the chapter Artful Expressions, "celebrates the treasured traditions of calligraphy, letter press, and wax seals." Yes, sealing wax is enjoying a resurgence in popularity not seen since the 70s. Kits are cropping up in shops and on Etsy, such as this one from SianShopCrafts.... pairing it with the book would be a thoughtful gift for someone who delights in corresponding the old school way.
80-page paperback and Kindle versions of Modern Papermaking - Techniques in Handmade Paper by Kelsey Pike were released on September 25, 2023 by C & T Publishing and are racking up positive reviews. Described by the publisher as the ultimate guide to papermaking, it certainly sounds approachable: "The craft is relatively easy and accessible since all the essential tools and supplies can be DIY'd, recycled, and thrifted." Thirteen projects are included.
The Soul of Gift Wrapping: Creative Techniques for Expressing Gratitude, Inspired by the Japanese Art of Giving by Megumi Lorna Inouye with a foreward by Beth Kempton (Wabi Sabi author) won't be out until April 2, but it looks lovely. The 208 page hardcover and Kindle versions from Storey Publishing include "inventive wrapping designs, inspiring personal essays, and step-by-step techniques..."
Photos teach "tape-free folding, paper and fabric bows, clever message tags, and one-of-a-kind approaches for odd-shaped items."
Speaking of Japanese-style wrapping techniques, Kimono Flowers Gift Wrapping Papers from Tuttle Studio would be an excellent pairing. The book of twelve 18 x 24-inch sheets was released just last October. While not a paper craft book per se, I'm including it here because the quality of Tuttle's perforated sheets that are neatly contained within a sturdy cover is always excellent. Not just for wrapping presents, they're a very good weight for paper craft projects.
ABC Origami: Learn Your Alphabet and Numbers Through Origami! by Naoko Ishibashi is a 112-page paperback and Kindle book from Tuttle Publishing that will be released on March 26. The author is considered Japan's #1 bestselling designer of origami models for children. Simple instructions are given for models of the 26 alphabet letters and 10 numbers, as well as 40 models of animals, foods, and more.
Here's the previous paper craft book round up.
