3D Sculptural Wall Reliefs by Anna Kruhelska
Granted, this wildly appealing wall relief sculpture by Anna Kruhelska is made of painted plywood... so why am I allowing it to have the place of honor in this All Things Paper post and featuring her in the Artist Spotlight? Because Anna also creates stunning works with paper.
A self-described minimalist, Anna, who is based in Lodz, Poland, is an architect and visual artist. I was introduced to her contemporary geometric paper art when it was featured on Colossal last December, and then was drawn to her more recent and equally appealing wood reliefs (above and below) via Instagram.
Yes, there is color when a wooden sculpture is viewed straight on, but the mesmerizing magic happens when it is seen at an angle. I suspect even the slightest tilt of the head will make a difference as the play of light and shadows creates undulating movement.
And now onto paper art... again, Anna captures a sense of movement.
While employed in architectural offices for a number of years doing work that entailed plans for high end residential buildings, five star hotels and luxury apartments in Russia, the UK, and Malaysia, she was drawn to taking on a personal project that would be more artistic and allow her creativity to flourish.
Initially, she folded fabric as a way of studying patterns and texture, but soon turned to paper because she had worked with it at university, but also because it is more rigid, allowing her to make structured, dimensional shapes.
Anna begins each abstract project on a computer, drawing 3D shapes and forms while looking for just the right repetitive pattern. When found, the model is translated to 2D so that it can be cut from a flat sheet of light resistant and acid-free paper.
Cutting is done by a plotter cutter and then the relaxing task of folding and gluing the components - anywhere from 40 to 1000 - is begun. When all of the units have been readied, the piece is assembled and professionally framed in wood and high-quality ArtGlass.
She currently works in both mediums, paper and wood, and is represented by a number of art galleries, including several in the U.S.
An exhibit of Anna's paper art, Order in the Wind, at Laura Rathe Fine Art in Dallas, Texas will open on August 26 and run through September 30, 2023. An additional exciting aspect of the same show is that the popular sculpted canvas art of Stallman will also be presented (previously featured here).
