Just wait until you see the modern paper bead designs Devi Chand of PaperMelon creates! This minimalistic wall clock, for example... the color gradient, precisely placed quilled coils, and a seemingly simple design add up to a piece of stylish and, of course, useful wall art.
(Letting you in on a little secret... designs that look simple are often the most difficult to create as there's no room for error.)
As a young child, Devi loved making things with paper, and later studied design at NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) in Chennai, India, where she worked for a design firm until deciding corporate life wasn't the best fit.
Devi is now a solopreneur who delights in devising designs that are sometimes surprising even to her. This is because the papers she uses are often upcycled - newspapers, magazines, paper bags, gift wrap, calendars, and pamphlets. Colorful patterns mean that Devi is never quite sure of the end result until she sees it.
Most of the paper jewelry pieces are composed of perfectly uniform grape rolls. (Like all types of quilled coils, grape rolls are incredibly versatile as they can be made in any size, from tree ornaments to tiny butterfly bodies.)
While Devi's husband lends a hand with shipping and her young daughter helps by cutting crinkle fill for packaging and making thank you cards to enclose with each order, the shop's popularity fills Devi's days... she does all of the paper rolling herself, as she holds her work to a high standard.
A completely different, but equally effective use of paper tubes.
The shop's slogan describes Devi's creations well... Made from Paper, Designed to Last. The beads are coated with a protective sealant, but, of course, shouldn't be taken for a swim.
Each piece is packaged in an artisan-made paper box that is reusable, recyclable, and tied with ribbon cut from tailoring waste to add a special touch.
There's lots more to see over at the PaperMelon website. You'll find Devi Chand on Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.

Fabulous quilling.
