Quilled Heart Designs
I have two quilled heart ideas to share with you today. First up is this asymmetric design I created to give as a framed gift for a baby's nursery. I almost see a smiling face within the hearts... this wasn't intentional, but perhaps totally apropos. After all, most everyone grins when looking at a little one!
I placed it in a contemporary Hovsta birch effect frame from IKEA... it's nice quality, includes acid-free matting, and is an ideal depth for a 1/8-inch (3mm) quilled design - not nearly as deep as many shadow boxes.
I also made a card to go with the present... more hearts! This is the couple's third child, thus the three trailing hearts in diminishing sizes. The two large ones are a riff on a quilled necklace I made some time ago (as seen here).
Instructions on making a variation of this type of heart can be found in my book, Creative Paper Quilling. The Gmund Wood Grain cardstock was from LCI Paper.
For another present that was given recently - birthday, this time - I used shibori print wrapping paper from Tuttle. In place of a bow, I taped on a dimensional paper star made from printer paper. I don't recall where I found the free template, but I know I made it by hand. Lia Griffith offers a similar downloadable star pattern for five and six point boxes here that can also be used with a cutting machine.
