Limitless Contemporary 3D Paper Sculptures
Today's featured paper artist is Christine Kirk of Paper Meditations, whose three dimensional paper sculptures are tremendously appealing. Each one is unique and created with flair and precision. Many are quite large too, framed as dramatic wall art, while others are meant to be displayed as hanging ornaments or event centerpieces.
Christine uses sturdy paper with a pearlescent sheen that adds elegance to the designs. Each sculpture is mounted onto an even stronger card stock backing. No color is off limits and the folds and curves fit together seamlessly making what she accomplishes look easy.... with the keyword being look. I can assure you this is tedious work requiring patience and a light touch.
Christine grew up in New Jersey and studied graphic design at Parsons School of Design in New York City, after which she became a graphic designer for Family Circle magazine. Later, her creative ambitions were put on hold while raising a family in York, Pennsylvania.
About twenty years ago she returned to her artistic roots by creating modern folded paper sculptures to decorate the walls of her home. Eventually Paper Meditations was born.
Like many paper artists, computer paper was Christine's first material. She found that folding identical forms and fitting them together resulted in a myriad of beautiful patterns. Adding cut strips and/or curved pieces led to even more design possibilities. Hypnotic II, below, has a true op art effect.
