3D Papercraft Sculpture - Low Poly Trophy Models from Ecogami
From time to time I feature an online paper art or paper craft shop that has caught my eye due to its special creativity. Éric François's Ecogami Shop (also Ecogami Shop on Etsy) is filled with clever folded paper patterns that make it one such destination.
While dimensional low poly animal trophies are quite popular, I like that Éric presents 3D models such as this crab that I haven't seen elsewhere, not to mention quite a few of his creatures are just right for summertime paper crafting. The models are so colorful and fun... great for idle moments when you need to relax, but also enjoy a sense of accomplishment.
Perhaps it's a rainy day at the beach house or you just want to create an imaginary getaway during a staycation. When complete, you'll have something great to brighten up your space!
Ecogami templates are immediate downloads... as long as you have a package of sturdy card stock on hand or a nearby print shop, you'll be prepared for those 'Mom, what can I do?' moments. Patient kids ages twelve and up should be able to complete a design independently.
Éric recommends paper that is at least 200 GSM, ideally 270. Print the template on colored paper or do what he does, which is print on white paper and assemble first, then add paint or color with Sharpie markers.
You'll also need scissors, a scoring tool, metal ruler, and white glue. In-depth instructions are included with each pattern.
You'll find lots more designs at Ecogami Shop and Etsy shop, Ecogami. There are quite a few dogs and other animal heads. I'm partial to this Scottish Terrier with its colorful collar and pink ears.
Eight different paper lampshades are stylish designs. Ecogami Shop is on Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
Here's another idea to learn something new this summer... Helen Hiebert's Paper Illuminated six week course will lead you through the process of using handmade paper to make lampshades and a folding screen that converts into a lantern.
Supply kits are available with or without papers. If you're interested in taking the class and would like to learn more before signing up, Helen will be hosting a live info session this Thursday, June 21 at 1pm ET (10am PT, 11am MT, 12pm CT).
Update! Eric has lots of new designs in Ecogami Shop. These Jack-o-lanterns for Halloween are just one example.

As for Ecogami's start, after seeing a paper animal trophy online
in 2016, Éric was intrigued... Googling took him to a shop
where he purchased his first pattern, an elephant head. He found the
cutting, folding, and gluing process to be enjoyable, and
the pride he felt when it was completed was icing on the cake.
After constructing a collection of models, Éric took things to the next level by learning to create his own designs using 3D software, and then taught himself to turn them into 2D.
