Paper Art Exhibit at Currier Museum of Art - Deep Cuts: Contemporary Paper Cutting

Deep Cuts: Contemporary Paper Cutting is an exhibit that just opened this past weekend at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire in the U.S. I'm hoping I'll have the chance to visit before it closes on May 21, 2017, as seeing the work of three dozen artists is right up my paper-loving alley.

The Currier website describes the exhibit: "Deep Cuts will showcase work by contemporary artists who reconsider, redefine and even subvert the centuries-old practice of paper cutting. In the tradition of the craft, the art to be featured in the exhibition is impressive and intricate, but its subject matter is updated for the 21st century."

"Addressing deeper personal or social themes, the work will touch upon complex reference points including the various cultural, economic and environmental associations imbued in the humble medium of paper."

Quite a few of the names are well-known in the paper art world. Quillers will recognize Lisa Nilsson's Male Pelvis from Tissue Series, which is included in the exhibit. Lauren Fensterstock, whose cut and curled black paper installation, Black Mirrors, has been showcased here on the blog, has work in the show as well.

There are forty one objects in the show. Currier's PR and Marketing Director, Steve Konick, explained, "Many of the artists created new work for the exhibition, including six installation works. Also, for context we have included seven works from the Currier’s permanent collection of historic papercuts from the 19th and early 20th century."
