Rescue Pet Papercut Portrait Art - Emmanuel Jose
Emmanuel Jose is a New York City-based papercut artist and illustrator. You might recall the series of playing cards
he began creating annually in 2011.
One design a week led to complete decks that have been printed by the
United States Playing Card Company and are avidly collected by
playing card fans. For example, Delicious, a food and dining-inspired deck, was successfully funded on Kickstarter.
After rescuing sister dogs Dottie and Coco this past year, Emmanuel was inspired to create endearing pet portraits that involve paper cutting and paper sculpture. The slightly rounded lines give the animals a soft effect, capable of winning over the hearts of prospective adopters.
A show featuring Emmanuel's art called Pets Playing Poker is underway at The PIT Loft, an improv and performance theater in New York through the end of October. Some of his playing cards are included too.
There are twenty four portraits on display. Nearly all feature shelter dogs and cats, and a number of them are animals from the Animal Care Centers of NYC, which is unfortunately a high kill shelter.
"Ever since adopting my dogs, I've become a rescue animal advocate. It's my wish for the art show to encourage others to foster or adopt animals in need."
